Debit Card Fraud Activity - October 2015
Over the past weekend some customers of Peoples Security Bank, as well as many non-customers with no affiliation with our bank, received automated phone calls from an unknown fraudster purporting to be from Peoples Security Bank. The message states that the customer’s debit card had been locked and then prompted them to press 1 for security where they were asked to enter their debit card number and personal identification number (PIN). These calls were not initiated by Peoples Security Bank and are fraudulent. This is a blanket, robotic Phishing scam and in no way is it linked to a breach of bank information.
Those customers who did enter their debit card number and associated PIN may have experienced some loss of funds as a result of this fraudulent activity. Customers who entered card information should immediately call 888.868.3858 or visit any branch office to deactivate the card.
The majority of customers contacted did not enter their debit card number or PIN when asked thereby ending the call and preventing any fraud. Access to our customer’s funds only resulted in loss of funds if the customer provided their debit card number and PIN during the fraudulent telephone call.
According to Craig W. Best, President & CEO, “Protecting our customers’ assets is our top priority. Our Information Technology & Security Departments work diligently with our core processor to provide the highest level of protection at all times. Nationally, debit and credit card fraud hit a 20 year high in 2015. Fraudsters continue to challenge financial institutions with various types of fraud. We regret this unfortunate incident and caution all customers to never provide their account, debit or credit card numbers over the phone unless the call is being initiated by them personally.”
